On the face of it, there’s nothing too surprising about an assassination attempt at former president Donald Trump. That’s the sort of thing that passes for civic discourse these days among people who don’t express themselves well. It did seem remarkable to me that attendees at Trump’s rally were so quick to blame Democrats for the incident, when the only sign the gunman was a liberal was that he missed. You need to be practicing this stuff.
I mean, yes. I’m a Democrat and I think the nation—the whole world—would be a far, far better place with Trump not in it. I do believe his capacity for sheer ignorant wickedness may be unsurpassed, certainly in this generation. But even if I think the Republican ticket could use a deletion, there’s nothing I could do about it, since my only weapons are fancy verbiage and an ACLU mug, neither of which is a threat to anybody. The best-written insults don’t land on a target that doesn’t understand them, and I have no athletic skills at all. Trump, his entire worshipful cohort, and the toady team that calls itself his party have nothing to fear from me. All they have to fear is my vote, and that means nothing at all, in a country with an Electoral College.
I do hate Trump, but I will never be in favor of post-fetal execution. Really, the only person who could have gotten away with such a thing is President Biden, according to a recent Supreme Court decision. But he’d never do it. He’s pretty much a pussy that way. And he’s hopelessly old-fashioned. He still thinks the rule of law and the sanctity of the vote are things.
The first rally attendee I heard interviewed said “They can’t beat him, so they’ll try to kill him.” The “they” here refers to, I guess, me, but there’s no reason to get specific. In a carefully constructed “us vs them” world view, “they” can be anyone or no one at all. As long as the population’s grievances—legitimate or invented—are kindled and set aflame, they means any amorphous thing that is thought to be their source. Truth-telling is a sucker’s game. There’s some effort to steer suspicion away from the billionaire class that has been so amply rewarded under Republican administrations, and certainly Trump and his fellow grifters, but otherwise, fill in the blank: the Government. The liberals. The queers. President Biden, the “worst president ever,” who is responsible for COVID, world-wide inflation, Putin’s war, and the bunion epidemic he’s already got on order from Chiner. America, your groceries are expensive and you’re in pain, but at least you know who to blame. Them.
And once you’ve delineated your own personal borders, with them on the outside, well. There’s all the justification in the world to take them down, and a subset of your tribe will be happy to carry out the explicit terror campaign. No target is too small: even lowly election workers should expect to be doxxed and stalked and threatened with death, for the crime of assisting in the democratic process.
I’m less clear what the rationale is to blame the mainstream press for the climate of violence, except that some of them duly report on Trump’s transgressions. I do know that authoritarians have no use for either democracy or a free press, so maybe there’s some kind of connection there. Just as an abusive man works to separate his victim from her family, friends, and support, an authoritarian will persuade the citizenry that the institutions of democracy and justice are their enemies. He will invent as many enemies as he needs and invoke them as often as he can and then present himself as the one solution. Maybe, even, the final solution. Immigrants become animals and vermin. Peaceful men and women protesting racial injustice are thugs. Democrats, of all the ineffectual people, are assassins, funded by Jews. And so they must be put down.
It’s a frightening world, if you’re surrounded by liberals with public-radio tote bags. They look harmless, but what’s in those bags? Fentanyl, harvested ballots, and a small Mexican. Be afraid. Stay afraid. Daddy will keep you safe.
From what I’ve read in the NYT about the shooter, he’s always been a staunch conservative, even in high school, in a school full of mostly liberals. He gave $15 to a Progressive fundraiser at age 17, which seems out of character. At 18, he registered Republican. His whole family were gun enthusiasts and hunters. So he learned to use guns early on. They had Trump signs on their lawn.
So why did he shoot at Trump, the party’s orange jesus? Paul has a theory about this. Perhaps he is a really good shot, and only meant to ding Trump’s ear. He could have been enlisted to do this by the Right, in order for Trump to invoke god as saving him for a higher purpose. Also, he could blame the Liberals, thereby cowing them so that they don’t tell truths about him. Did Crooks know he’d be killed in the process? Perhaps, perhaps not. These MAGA people are crazy enough to give up their lives for him.
I’m scared, Murr. I’m glad that I’m older and won’t be in this world all that long. It’s a frightening place, and I fear that most people are so ill-informed about the news, or have just started putting their heads in the sand in despair, guaranteeing a Trump presidency. I hope that I’m wrong, and that people come out in droves to vote against him. Democracy. It was a nice idea while it lasted.
I believe this too, that he did exactly the job he was hired to do. I doubt the outcome was in the original contract, however, but who’s he going to complain to now?
A random human also sacrificed in the aftermath? TIFI’s first campaign promise was that he could shoot someone in a crowd (he gave 5th Avenue as an example) and get away with it.
He’s been craving a public “I’m invincible!” spectacle ever since he wasn’t allowed to wear/reveal a Superman shirt after coming back from his COVID intervention.

I have to admit I can’t bring myself to imagine this as an inside job. That sort of gets into Jewish Space Laser territory. Then again, every time I think things can’t get any weirder…
This dead kid shot others, killing one, critically injuring two others, and now his family, too, has lost their son, and no matter WHAT anyone says about motive, the bottom line is that anyone can get a gun in America.
We’ve stopped going to crowded places, like festivals, theaters, malls, and downtown Wilmington at night. There are too many shootings in our area, and although I doubt anyone is targeting us, we could very easily be collateral damage, like those poor people at the Trump rally. No one should have to fear being shot because they were at a campaign rally.
I don’t go to crowded places on account of all the people in them. Sneezy people, some of them. Although if there has to be a pink hat brigade in the streets next January, count me in.
So far, whether planned or just convenient timing for a nutjob to take a potshot at Trump, the “victorious” optic of him raising his fist with the flag over his head has not resulted in a bump in the polls for Trump. I think too many of us find the whole thing kind of “off” and are skeptical. Trump is the boy who cried wolf and people are like, “Really? This had to be fake.” So no bump for Trump! 538 now has Biden favored to win (not by a lot so far but we’ll take it). This isn’t over by any means. We must keep the faith!
For the first time in my 68 years I wonder if I should arm myself against the upcoming Rwandan style purge that is brewing. These are very, very dangerous times.
I am also 68. I don’t own a gun, nor do I intend to get one, no matter how things go. My weapons — besides sarcasm — are a sword and a dirk (nerdy Lord of the Rings fan, and Outlander fan) and even if facing an AR15, I’ll run at them with them, yelling. Sure, I’d be mowed down quickly. But better that than live in the sort of country this may be. (Paul is more the baseball bat sort of guy. Maybe wrapped with razor wire, channeling Negan from The Walking Dead.)
Y’know who I worry about most? Late night talk show hosts who have humiliated him. Colbert. Kimmel. Meyers. Maher. Oliver. Stewart. My Boyz, who make me laugh and get me through this bullshit. Humor helps keep me ~relatively~ sane. I’ve tried worry, despair, depression, and they don’t do shit about all this. Humor helps take my mind — temporarily — off of it.
Thanks, Murr. I needed this. And this line made me laugh out loud, “…the only sign the gunman was a liberal was that he missed.”
Arming myself doesn’t work for me, so I’m volunteering at my county election office this November.
The Lord’s work! Bless you, my friend.
Thank you for keeping the faith!! I’m supporting local candidates, the occasional swing state senator or representative, and the Biden-Harris campaign. I text, write postcards, door knock and send $$. I’ve been unwell most of the year, but I’m out and about now and grateful. At 75 I’m not too old to Get Out the Vote-the Blue Vote. I’m in Tennessee so I could say my vote doesn’t matter. But I won’t. Too many people died for my rights and freedoms, and I’m not about to squander the opportunity to use my voice in an election. I could be dead any day, but my grands, all nine of them, will never be able to say their Mimi didn’t care about their futures. Thanks, Murr, for the liberal laugh line. Thanking whatever is holy that is the truth.
You’re an inspiration, Marcia.
I don’t think it was a staged event, or that the gunman was hired to ‘just barely miss’. It would presuppose trump would be willing to let a 20 year old, from 150 yards, shoot at the ear on his head. He’s nut’s, but not that nuts. And the kid wasn’t a remarkable shot. He didn’t make the school team on the rifle range.
It almost feels like this weird confluence of horrid events, like something Lemony Snicket would dream up. Biden’s poor debate, now this.
I don’t know what to make of trump’s performance after the nick…in character was him yelling for his lift shoes, he likes to pretend he’s 6’3″.
I think, unless we and Dems everywhere, turn out to vote in force, for whatever dem is on the ballot, we’re screwed.
I’m probably the only one here that has guns, I do know a bit about being shot at, from long ago. I think the only thing that is off is how poorly the security was handled, but I’m betting that is not sinister, just lack of preparation.
I’m with you. What really pisses me off is the damn Electoral College. How is it in any citizen’s interest to have their vote not count? Your vote for president doesn’t count in this country unless you’re in one of six or seven states. And let’s not get into how much more important Wyoming citizens’ votes are.
Pisses me off too. What a stupid system. Just… why?
It was to make the slaveholders agree to a confederation. Well-documented but well-ignored.
Well said Murr. That stupid Electoral College should be disbanded immediately. Or last week. Vote counts will never be true as long as they are in charge.
We’ve already had, what, two candidates win the general but lose the electoral, and can you even imagine how different this world MIGHT have been if Gore was in charge early on?
This piece is too incisive and funny to be published in the NYT or New Yorker or LA Times.
I couldn’t have said it any better, or more likely nearly as well. Thank you, once again, for outlining the real narrative so clearly, so (ok darkly) entertainingly, and so powerfully.
Good column and one I will save, but I actually think Putin far exceeds Trump in the wickedness department, amazing as that may be. Perhaps you were limiting your assessment to the US. In fact, Putin may be the reason we’re having to deal with Trump, but that can’t be proven. Putin’s a big one for “plausible deniability”.
In that Putin actually has a brain and uses it for evil, yes. Trump is an instinctual showman who knows nothing except how to play to a gullible crowd on his way to personal enrichment.
I am still incredulous over the news about Helen Comperatore, who refused a phone call from Biden because her dead husband wouldn’t have wanted her to talk to a Democrat. Her dead husband, who died for Trump! He was the man killed at the rally Saturday.
I remember reading that a hero would die for you, but a cult leader wants you to die for him. There could be nothing clearer. Nothing. You might as well drag them out to 5th Avenue and give Trump the gun. And still they will vote for him.
I hadn’t heard about that. I have to admit if a similar situation had happened to me I would not be interested in talking to a President Trump, at all, although I would have answered the phone out of politeness.
I heard that Helen later said Trump did not call her after her husband was shot.
Loved your editorial…worthy of the NYT!!
